Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has said Grade 7 learners will each contribute Sh4,000 for the building of laboratories.
Machogu spoke on Friday during the release of the 2022 KCSE exam at the Kenya National Examinations Council office in Nairobi.
The CS further said the government had promised a Sh9.6 billion capitation grant to Grade 7 learners for term 1 and 2 of 2023,
“With which each of them will receive an individual capitation of Sh15,000 per year,” he said.
Machogu said it is out of the Sh15,000 capitation per student that Sh4,000 from each learner will be used to build laboratories.
“Of the Sh15,000 that will be released for each learner, Sh4,000 will be spent on the building of infrastructure with the greatest priority being laboratories,” he said.
The CS added that more funds will come from the CDF fund, which he is hopeful MPs will set aside.
“As we give the Sh4,000 out of the Sh15,000 for building of laboratories, I am aware that MPs will also be able to set aside money out of CDF so that we are able to ensure we put up laboratories this year,” he said.
Machogu added that in the next financial year, the government will spend Sh18 billion for the school capitation grant.
He said they are currently negotiating with the World Bank for funds to enable the ministry to put up 7,000 labs across the country.
