The government has unveiled the distribution of Junior Secondary school textbooks as learners prepare to report next week Monday.
The distribution that will cost the government over Ksh3 billion comes after the assessment of primary schools to gage their readiness to host JSS learners.
Speaking during the launch, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said the government will ensure all Grade 7 learners have access to learning materials.
“The Ministry of Education has consistently distributed CBC books to learners in line with its policy of achieving One book per learner. Government aims to ensure all the students have the adequate learning materials,” he said
Machogu said the government has so far identified over 20,000 schools which will be hosting grade 7 learners saying the Ministry will release the specific number in due time.
The CS advised schools to use only books approve by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
“Approval of the books has been achieved through a rigorous evaluation process by the KICD. Each learner will be issued a textbook in each of the core learning areas,” Machogu said
KICD CEO Prof Charles Ong’ondo said all the books have been evaluated in line with the curriculum needs that meet international standards.
“Junior Secondary School intends to offer learners skills before they select their interests in the senior schools. We have 12 core learning areas in the JSS and all the books have been evaluated in line with the KICD Functions that meet international standards.”
The government is distributing the books to public schools while private schools have been asked to get textbooks from bookshops across the country.
